Daniel Thomasso is one of the upcoming and a name to reckon with in the Dance music scene. He was just eighteen years old when he played his first gig at club Seven. We EDM Lovers India had the privilege to have him do a Guest Mix for our Friday Podcast in our Rave Radio
We were also fortunate to catch up with him for an up close and personal interview with him.Without any further adage we take you straight to his interview
EDM Lovers India : First, we would like to thank you for the Podcast show and accepting to do an interview with us
Daniel : You are welcome. It was a pleasure to work on this podcast!
EDM Lovers India : Would you like to share some personal details about yourself with us and our EDM Lovers India followers?
Daniel : As a child I was always figuring out music instruments, theater, dance, sports and other kinds of arts. I was and still am a huge fan of the genre House and also Trance. Tiësto who is one of my favorite artists made me realize that it is also possible for me to become a DJ if I put all into it and of course I give my everything and that is when i started on as a DJ at Seventeen which was four years ago.
I played my first gigs in Club Seven when I was eighteen years old. These were small gigs and just for fun, sometimes for free. Right now I am studying at the conservatory of Pop music, called Rock Academy in Tilburg, Netherlands where I am following the study of music production. This is the same university where DJ’s like Hardwell, Franky Rizardo and Firebeatz started. It feels great to be a part of this school and community since September 2014
EDM Lovers India : What are your favorite to do things in your free time?
Daniel : As you can understand, I am working 24/7 on my music, at school and in my free time. I do not only work on my own music of course but also on songs for school which I work on with other groups (So also on other genres i.e. Drum & Bass and Dubstep). Next to my music I do go out with friends of course, which I love and I go to the gym.
EDM Lovers India : We know you have played in many festivals like Daydream and places like Escape. Would you like to share that experience with us?
Daniel : Well, the experience in playing on festivals and clubs like that is amazing! Sharing stages and line-ups with already very big names out of the DJ scene is really a big dream coming true. Especially Escape in Amsterdam, on of the hot spots during Amsterdam Dance event (This event takes place every year in September for a few weeks) where Martin Garrix, Dyro and Bassjackers also played. Escape in Amsterdam is an amazing venue where good quality sound systems and visuals come together and give you the best festival experience
EDM Lovers India : How does it feel to be a DJ?
Daniel : In my opinion, it is the best feeling ever. I have the possibilities to cheer people up, make them smile again after a rough week and give them the best night since weeks again… Kind of God power, is it not? Just kidding, but for me as a person, I really love to be there for everyone and to help people and my music is the best way to express that.
EDM Lovers India : Dutch seem to be so natural at EDM, any specific reason for that?
Daniel : I think it is because of eating cheese, haha! No in my opinion it is because of several facts. First of all, The Netherlands is a very small country. Within thirty Kilometers, you have ten different clubs or festivals going on so as a DJ you are able to play one to four gigs in one night. This is a very big benefit and DJ’s can practice a lot. I know, Dutch people are the hardest crowd in the world to entertain. If you are able to make them dance and smile at the same time, you can play anywhere in the world. The Netherlands was and is always a country that likes to try things out. The Dutch crowd though is a hard crowd, they are always open to try something new out. Thus DJ’s can easily test their newest record on the crowd and if it works then the record is a success.Hence DJ’s grow very fast and also there are a lot of radio stations who play house music in the Netherlands
EDM Lovers India : Time for us to put you to some testing time, of all the Dutch DJ’s if you are to pick just one person as your favorite who would that be?
Daniel : Well that is a tough question! I think it is Franky Rizardo, this man is a really great and very helpful with productions but also with personal matters in a career. I have a lot of respect, he has changed his Latin House style to a more Tech House style. Now seeing him release on labels like Defected in the House scene is really inspiring for me. It shows me to never give up and work for it if you want to achieve something.
EDM Lovers India : You have recently been in India and was one of the main event artists of Flight2AMS, how was that experience?
Daniel : Yes, that is right. I played in Hyderabad, Bangalore and New Delhi with the Flight2AMS concept and it was seriously one of the best experiences so far. The people in India are so dedicated to this music genre, it was very overwhelming me. It gave me the feeling that I just started my own career and that there is so much more to achieve in the future. But seeing that people in those cities already now my music was a very good experience. During those gigs, the energy was so good that it seemed unreal. I felt a connection with the crowd the whole time, which I never felt before with my gigs in The Netherlands. I think the country India Is amazing and the people are very friendly, I hope to come back in the future.
EDM Lovers India : What inspires you to make electronic music?
Daniel : The biggest factor behind making Electronic music for me is to express my emotions. I want to reach out to everyone in the world with my music and to get everyone in the right mood. Next to that, I want to be more on stage and give everyone a night they will not forget. To see people’s reaction nowadays on new tracks/songs and bootlegs is also a main factor for me to work harder on my music.
EDM Lovers India : What kind of EDM do you listen to?
Daniel : Most of the time I listen to Progressive House. But I also love to listen to Deep House and relax a bit. Although Drum and Bass is also very great for a long drive, which I definitely do not in this small country.. haha.
EDM Lovers India : You are known for your mashup’s and mixtapes because of your unique sound. What inspires you that makes this very unique and already a brand Daniel Thomasso work?
Daniel : Well, to be honest, I always want to get the best out of myself. So when it comes to making DJ-sets, I want to have the craziest and best set of the night. So I prepare a lot of mashups and edits for that specific moment. This also applies to mix tapes or live radio sets. And sometimes when the crowd reaction is so great I give it away for free so other DJ’s can use it as well.
EDM Lovers India : Would you like to share your “Dark Horse” experience with us and anything that Nicky Romero had to share with you after playing that in Tomorrowland 2014?
Daniel : Of course I would like to share that with you guys. It is actually the same process I have with other mashups. I had a booking in The Netherlands and I was scrolling through my library for that night’s set. I was making some new mashups with the newest tracks. Wouter my manager told me that Dark Horse from Katy Perry is a big track at that moment and it still is and that this song would really move up the crowd and especially girls will like it so the boys will follow. I did not find a good song to combine it with until Howl At The Moon was released by Protocol Recordings. I made a Mashup of it and played it at the club. The reaction of the crowd was so good every time, after a few days the original track reached number #1 on Beatport. Well yeah, I thought why not! I did send my promo emails around to other DJ’s and released it for free. Nicky Romero was the first one to air it on Protocol Radio, which really helped out me a lot. Names like Martin Garrix, Afrojack and many more followed. To see him play this on both weekends of Tomorrowland 2014 was really amazing. It was just a mashup for my set, but it turned out to be a peak time track of many big DJ’s around the world. One word: CRAZY!
EDM Lovers India : We know there are many mainstream artists who would love to collab with a talent like you, if we had to ask you about your favorites whom you would love to collaborate with, who would it be?
Daniel : That is absolutely Kryder, non-stop. His productions are so well mixed, well produced and the energy is always right.
EDM Lovers India : What are the upcoming works and what can be expected in 2015 from you?
Daniel : The upcoming works are Daniel Thomasso productions. Am working my ass of to get the productions to a very high level that can be compared with other DJ’s on bigger labels. It is going very well so I cannot wait to share with you the first release info. Next to that, my India Tour video is coming the upcoming weeks. I filmed everything by myself with a Go Pro camera. So more news about that soon, next to my website that is going to be online at the 15th of January.
EDM Lovers India : What would you want to share about his Guestmix for Indian fans and about EDM Lovers India?
Daniel : This guest mix is inspired on my live sets in India. I wanted to give everyone the feeling of the shows that I have played. But I also want to give people, who did not meet me or experienced my shows, the best experience of Daniel Thomasso. I am really happy with blogs like EDM Lovers India, thank you for having me. I think you guys are doing a great job. Keep this going and you will definitely become bigger in India for sure.
EDM Lovers India : We all love sneaky first bits, anything you want to share exclusively with Indian fans about your tours, artist associations in 2015?
Daniel : Haha, that sounds familiar to me. Well, I can say I will definitely come back to India or other countries in India in 2015.
