Ques : Ferry Its been more than two and half decades for you in the industry, how do you think trance has changed and evolved over the years ?
Reply : You see things come and go but Trance was always there, there were times it went down a little bit but never disappeared, you also might say that there were some genres of music which penetrated in between but its like a curve where your graph goes up and down but you are always there. The good thing is the trance scene is back again and that too on a much larger scale.
Trance is now one of the most respected genres of the industry. There might be new genres that will always come up and surprise you like Future house is ruling the industry these days but Trance definitely is here to stay. There are so many new markets which have opened up for trance for example India, China and off course America and these are big countries, So yes trance is now been served to so many people and that is really exciting. The music culture in these countries are changing, People are now ready to listen and experiment with different types of music, thanks to the evolution of social media in last 5 years.
Ques : You just mentioned about social media, What exactly is the impact of social media on Producers and DJs ?
Reply : Well, these days sometimes it looks like it is all about how strong your PR team is, How much attention you are grabbing through the social media and it is really important. For example no one knew about Martin Garrix in 2013, but today the whole world knows about him. So basically in my opinion the industry is divided into 2 categories, First one is the “musical producers/Djs” and the other one is “social media producers/Djs”. There are producers who have years of experience with them and they nurture their sound over the years and then there are producers who become a star overnight. So basically social media has a lot of role in making producers an instant hit over night. It’s like next morning you wake up and you have a new musical star. Boom !!!
Ques : Trance is all about emotions and feelings, how do you prepare yourself , What has kept you motivated through out your career ?
Reply : Yeah, Its been a pretty long journey but i must say for me its just how well your chords and notes are, When i create a track i am totally into it, sometimes just the change of one note or chord gives me goosebumps and that is the moment i realise, yes this gonna work. See there are no hard and fast rules to make a track or a particular pattern, your things should be placed in a pattern that as an artist you should like it and yes that works.
Ques : Talking about your label, Its been 20 years for Flashover Recordings in the industry, What is you stand on your label ?
Reply : I am very happy with Flashover recordings, See as a label you need to think different than as an artist, As an artist i can experiment, I can do many different things but as a label i have to pick things which are really really good. You might be a trance label but when you have a really nice house tracks that comes in and you are like WOW, we need to release this, So for that you can have a sub level. but as an artist i would love to stick around trance though their can be little variations.
Ques : Coming down to commercials, As a label does money matters or it is only about releasing good music ?
Reply : As a label it has to be balance of both, You have to release 2 commercial tracks and then may be 2 tracks with underground artists. People in the market know the artist behind the label, So I know what they expect from me, So even if i want I can not go too commercial, I can not loose the faith of people by just releasing tracks which are full of commercial stuff.
Ques : What does Mr. Ferry Corsten prefer a vocal trance or a melodic trance ?
Reply : I love both but i think it is really important to mix things up. I prefer doing 2-3 amazing beautiful instrumentals and then a vocal trance track. Even for my sets, If i only play a vocal set i think it lacks that punch and vibes. Similarly if you play only instrumental track it become too anonymous. So yes it all about the balance and how well you maintain it.
Ques : Talking about Gourellya, You and Tiesto both are over here in the festival, Can we see Gourellya coming down to India, what is going on between both of you ?
Reply : (With a broad Smile ) We are working on it and we have kept it exclusively for festivals, We are doing 2 big festivals in Australia. We are also teaming up with 2 big promoters in America, We want it to bring it to the world now. Hopefully if we can team up with big promoters in India then why not.
