Sometimes, when strong forces are combined, magic happens. That was the case when Dutch DJ’s and producers Lucas de Wert and Steven Jansen decided to join forces in 2010, after having gained several years of solo-experience in clubs in Holland and Belgium. Their project ‘Lucas & Steve’ was born. As they bundled their strengths they quickly invaded the scene, releasing tracks on premium labels such as Hotfingers, Tiger Records (GER), Natura Viva (IT), Be Yourself Music (NL) and Grin Recordings (UK)! Among these releases was the climax of their early career: their remix of Red Carpet’s smasher ‘Alright’ (together with Nothing But Funk), which was charted #1 on the Beatport house top 100 for two weeks! The fresh and groovy house and tech-house sounds of Lucas And Steve got airplay by several big shots in the business, such as Armin van Buuren, Fedde Le Grand, UMEK, Roger Sanchez, Manuel De La Mare, My Digital Enemy, Sick Individuals, The Cube Guys, Max Vangeli, Federico Scavo and many more. The Dutch Duo have been consistently dropping some really good stuff on Spinnn’ Deep in recent times.
With many accomplishments at such an early stage of their massive career, it is exciting to know what do they have in store for us in the upcoming year. EDMLI had the privilege of chatting with the Dutch duo, Lucas & Steve after their recent tour at Sunburn Festival in Pune .
Q1) About the track ‘Enigma’ that you’ve collaborated with Pep & Rash, both maintained your own styles in production, so how did you guys overcome while mixing your styles?
A) We spent a lot of hours in the studio together. While combining all our ideas we tried to create the track without losing both our signature sounds. To be honest, this all went automatically. We’ve always had such a great vibe with Pep & Rash.

Q2) You likely ended up dropping the last session of the year of your podcast where you promised to drop a year mix & also some new music coming. Can you tell us what we can expect about your upcoming productions?
A) Our new track featuring Jake Reese is out now! The track is all about feel good and energy. Support has been great so far and it feels good to see so many radio stations playing the track. Also, we’ve been in the studio a lot with Firebeatz lately. Unfortunately, we cannot tell you the details already, but there’s a lot going on around this track. Really excited!
Q3) If you wanted to choose between Don Diablo or EDX for your next collaboration, whom would you go with?
A) That’s a tough one! I think production-wise our sound is closest to Don so I’m sure we could make one hell of a banger together. On the other hand, EDX started killing it so many years ago and his sound is still huge and refreshing. Would definitely be a very interesting collaboration also!
Q4) What kind of music do you listen to other than EDM?
A) Hip-Hop/R&B, jazz, pop but also classical music. Pretty much everything can be a great inspiration.
Q5) What do you do on days when you’re not producing music?
A) Touring haha! And… interviews, social media, press; We have a lot of things to do & apart from that we also try to live a healthy life, so we try to go to the gym whenever we can.

Q6) What do you think about the music production scene in India? Your comment on upcoming Indian producers?
A) I think Indian DJ’s have started to make their way up in the scene since a couple of years, which is a great thing to see. We discussed this a couple of weeks ago when we were in India. It happens that you can hear that a track is produced by an Indian producer by listening to the melody. It feels different, it can be refreshing.
Q7) Is there any difference while playing for Indian crowds? Do you feel they are more energetic and lively?
A) The Indian crowd is one of the best crowds to play for. In fact, a lot of DJ’s talk about this. Indian crowds go wild on every drop if the sound is right, it’s always special.
Q8) Where do you see yourself in the future? How about starting your own record label?
A) We already have a pretty good impression about what 2017 is going to be like for us and we’re really happy with this. We’ve got a whole lot of new music coming up and the festival season is looking crazy already. There are definitely plans for a records label of our own, but not for 2017.
