We go an opportunity to chat with the super talented Ryan Davis :
1. How would you describe your music?
My music is always based on melodies and emotions. I guess thats a result of my classical guitar training I had over 9 years. I always try to get a warm defined sound shaped with well carved synths and the idea to embed this into an electronica & experimental percussion construct that still is allowing the listener to dance to it.
2. You were born in Germany, so what were the influences which you had? What music did you grew up listening to?
I grew up with electronic music of the 90´s but loved all kind of music, I guess thats why my sound is a mix of a lot of styles and everything from house, techno, trance, electronica, electro, hip hop or breaks is streaming through my process of creation. The 90´s and beginning 2000 where very open minded and experimenting years for electronic music, the borders were more fluent as they are today. So I found myself in big festivals, warehouses, dark basements, shiny clubs.. I think somewhere my music reflects that kind of vibe.
3. How did you release your very first single?
A friend of mine told me about the new, fresh platform myspace and that I should upload some music there and add labels. So I opened a myspace page and uploaded 2 tracks. I added 3 or 4 labels and a months later the two tracks where signed. It was a 12” and was received very well by people and shaped my way for the future.
4. As we all know, you own Back Home & Klangwelt Record Labels. Is there any special reason behind owning 2 record labels?
The first label I owned was Mapripoza, a vinyl only label. When vinyl sales went down for all labels out there the crew and I decided to leave Maripoza as vinyl label and open instead Back Home as a new beginning. We worked with a lot of artists who became big names now in all kinds of genres. I guess one could say it was a playful time for electronic music. Later, the music became more defined and the melodic club music started to grow whilst the love for playful electronica seemed to sink. So I decided to open up another Label which carries more the spirit of clubbier stuff and keep Back Home the playful one. Thats the main idea behind it. Though Klangwelt gets more attention at the moment and has some really good stuff coming up.
5. You’ve released your production on almost every single melodic techno label. How does it feel?
I always was a kind of nomad with my music. My sound stays always mine but changes here and there from time to time. I always went with the label that felt right for my sound at that specific moment and which left me the most possible space and freedom for my new creations. I also have a lot of “friends” on the different labels and we work together here and there. It is a good feeling. Having releases on almost all of of those melodic labels shows the appreciation for my personal vision of music and consequent support from all around the world.
6. What do you have in store for your fans for the year 2017? / Can we expect an EP/Album for 2017?
I guess I already released a bunch of new stuff in 2017. I had a remix for Aparde which I am really happy with. I also had a great collaboration track with Microtrauma. Furthermore, I got superb remixes for my Original Aeons and now I am about to drop my next EP “Jima” with a remix by Solee on his label Parquet Recordings. Also a remix on Anjunadeep will be out beginning of may which will challenge peoples ears again. Next to it, I work on a new multi track EP. I don’t know yet if it becomes an album, time will tell.
8. You recently finished up your India tour. How was the experience?
I enjoyed India a lot. The people are friendly and open to the music. People running the venues there really try to bring some good stuff over to their country and introduce big artists but also cool underground and independent stuff. That has an educational function, same with your blog. It is important for art to spread. India is a challenging country and faces a lot of changes I guess. Let good music that makes people humble and happy be a part of it!
