Dutch DJ and record producer duo Blasterjaxx is a very familiar name in the electronic music circuit. They entered the scene 7 years ago, and they’ve consistently held prominence in the industry ever since. Their songs have been on labels like Spinnin’ Records, Dim Mak, Revealed, and many more. They’ve collaborated with artists such as Hardwell, Tiesto, Laidback Luke, MOTi, W&W, Dmitri Vegas and Like Mike.
Blasterjaxx did an India tour last month in association with Nocturnal and FiveSixZero. We got to speak to Thom Jongkind at his Bangaluru show. Here’s how it went.
What all places have you visited in India? No sightseeing?
Thom: Just to my room and the bar. No sightseeing I just arrived here and I`m pretty tired for sightseeing but I`ll come next time.
It has almost been an year since Idir stopped touring. How do you feel about that? How is he feeling now?
Thom: It`s been 2 years already and he is doing really good. He is in a much better place working on the studio and me on tour. I think it is good for the both of us he is in a good place and I am in a good place and it has worked out pretty well so far.
What has been the best moment in your musical career so far?
Thom: I think everyday is a good moment. Making people listen to your music is a pretty amazing feeling. I`m pretty blessed I can do this every weekend. Like you know, making a living out of making and playing music.
So tell us more about how Blasterjaxx came? Where this name came from?
Thom: It was like 7 years ago I think. I just wrote down a lot of names for a week and just checked out whatever names could fit the kind of sound I was about to bring. So yeah that`s how I got it. I was thinking that if I was going to play big shows and I had to have a nice intro so Blasterjaxx kinda sounds pretty powerful.
Till now, what has been you personal favorite Blasterjaxx track? What`s the story behind it?
Thom: I think its gotta be Rocket. I made the ID and sent it to W&W we sat in the studio and made a lot of changes in the breakdown. The ID was still there but W&W they`re amazing producers and they made an absolutely amazing drop out of it. It was a whole process actually, we had a lot of fun and just in one day we finished the whole track then after mastering it, it was done.
What would be a piece of advice you’d like to give to young and upcoming producers?
Thom: Well keep checking out all the huge tutorials because there`s very big information there. Make original sounds, dont make future bass because future bass is popular make the sounds that you like.
You’ve already stoked us this year with XX Files and XX Files Festival Edition. What are your plans for the future? Anything to reveal about you future releases, EPs, albums or major collaborations?
Thom: Yeah we have got a lot of huge tracks coming up. We have many upcoming releases with Maxximize records. We have an upcoming collaboration with Timmy Trumpet and a couple of solos on Maxximize, thats all I can say as of now.
Wasback is a young emerging artist. Do you have something to say about him? Could there be a Blasterjaxx and Wasback collaboration?
Thom: There`s no collaboration with him yet, but we have done an edit of him. This kid is really talented, he has no musical background but he is making seriously good tracks and amazing melodies.
Is there any artist you’re eyeing for a collaboration?
Thom: I think we have already collaborated with a lot of artists. The likes of Hardwell, W&W and now Timmy Trumpet. If I had to name one I`d say Armin Van Buuren.
What do you think about electronic music in India? Any message you’d like to give to the Indian Blastersoldiers?
Thom: Yeah well first of all I`m really happy with our fans in India. We have a really big fanbase here. I do not know how this comes but really happy with all the fans, we had so many messages when this tour was announced on all social media platforms.
