Just few more days until the Dutch DJ/Producer will be smashing the MAJORIS stage at TIMEOUT 72 in Goa. Also this year saw Martin Garrix’s repeat at the number one spot atop the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ list.
1.Please give us a glimpse into what your fans can expect at the TimeOut72 festival. What led you to say yes to playing India, anyway?
I love India and it’s always an honor to play here. I’m bringing the new production over to you guys and I’m looking forward to having a big party with everyone there!
2.2017 is ending. How has the year been?A round-up of all the exciting stuff you did and what 2018 looks like — at least the first few months?
I’ve experienced so many amazing things again this year. First off we’ve had a crazy festival season with shows like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Ultra and Tomorrowland. I of course had my two amazing residencies in Ibiza at Hï and Ushuaïa and my Las Vegas residency at Omnia. Another great moment for me this year was playing two sold out nights in the Amsterdam RAI during ADE again. One of the shows was for all ages and it was so amazing to see all these young people who normally can’t go to my shows enjoy themselves to the fullest. In 2018 I will first take some time off to go on holidays and we’re confirming some shows again at the moment, so I’m already looking forward to that!
3.How has dance music evolved according to you since the time you started producing and DJing?
I think music is always evolving and that is a good thing for sure.
4.Does becoming the world’s biggest DJ in early 20s make you feel it’s all happening too fast, too soon? How do you stay grounded?
I have amazing people around me like my team, friends and family who have known me for a long time now. They aren’t afraid to speak up and make sure that both my feet stay on the ground.
5.You once said that you can’t work with someone you don’t connect with. On what level is the ‘connection’?
Good musician, professionalism, good human being or something else? I think it’s a combination of all of that. When you have this great connection in the studio it’s almost magical. You have to be comfortable around each other and also connect on a personal level next to a musical level. That enables an atmosphere in which you get more creative.
6.Who are your favourite DJs currently?
There are so many good DJs out there at the moment! I have a lot of great talent on STMPD RCRDS, we recently released songs from Blinders, Brooks, CMC$ and Codes. All so talented!
7.What keeps you motivated?
My love for music always keeps me motivated. It’s literally a hobby that has grown to a certain level. As soon as I wake up I listen to music; I go to bed while listening to music; I make music. And of course also my fans, who keep me motivated with all their support. To see them having fun and sing along to my tracks at shows is just amazing. That really gives me so much energy!
8.Do you ever feel the pressure of stardom?
I do feel pressure from time to time, but I think that is normal as an artist. You want to evolve and show that to the world. It’s just that I don’t want to disappoint my fans and want to give the best of myself every single day. I have a lot of unreleased tracks right now and I only want to bring out the best ones.
9.Music-wise, you’ve only been part of short films and documentaries so far. Why not full-fledged films?
I don’t know, I think that film hasn’t had my main focus. Right now I’m very focussed on producing new music. Of course I would love to compose more music for films! I’m interested in all kinds of music so that’s definitely something I’d go for!
10.How does it feel coming to India?
What do you like the most about the country? I always love going to India. This place has so much energy and loyal fans. Every time I do a show the whole crowd goes crazy, and I love that vibe.
11.How have your past performances here been?
Crazy! I always get so much support here. A lot of times people are already waiting at the airport.
12.What’s your set going to be like for the December gig? What are you expecting from the audience here?
I’m expecting some craziness from the crowd. And of course I’m not spoiling yet what my set is going to be like, you will have to come and see for yourself! I might have some surprises for you!
13.You’ll be in the country for how many days?
What do you plan to do besides playing? I will probably be there for the weekend, so if I have some time off I definitely would like to do some sightseeing! I always like to actually see something from the country that I’m visiting.
14.What role has social media played in your popularity and in making you the artist you are?
Social media allows you to connect to your fans at all times. I love sharing my experiences with them as much as possible. I think it creates more engagement when people can see where I am and what I am doing. So yeah, it definitely plays a great roll in my career as an artist.
15.Tell us about the projects you’re working on?
It’s crazy how much unreleased music I have right now. I’ve been in the studio with Ryan Tedder, I got something in the works with him and I’m very excited about that. I just can’t wait to put out new music.
16.Martin, since you’ve been to India before, what was your experience like in the country from an artist’s perspective — the audience, response and potential?
As an artist, experiencing different cultures is really interesting. The energy I get from the crowd during my shows is amazing. And of course I always love to visit you guys!
17.Has India ever inspired your music in any way?
Or is there an Indian artist, a particular song that has caught your attention lately? I can get my inspiration from so many things around me. I love to listen to music from other artists and watch them perform. Also I get a lot of my inspiration when I’m touring. Who knows I might get inspired when I’m there!
18.Your fans in India have been dedicatedly listening your music. Do you have anything special planned for them in terms of the tracks you’ve picked?
I always try to adjust my sets to the crowd and the vibes I’m getting from them. I always want to give away the best show possible. What I like to do is surprise people, so I’d like the show to be a surprise as well!
19.On a lighter note, what else do you plan to do after the gig is over?
Anything specific that you’ve got on your mind? I would love to explore the country and get in touch with locals and the culture. I think I’ll stay here for the weekend so hopefully when my schedule let’s me I can get to know the country a little bit more.
20.This is not the first time you are coming to India. Tell us about what s it about India that you like the most and why? Also what makes you keep coming back?
First and foremost to see my fans there. That’s always the main reason to come back of course. India is really beautiful with an amazing culture. It’s so different from my home country. That’s what I like about being on tour, visiting so many different countries over the world, I get a lot of inspiration from that as well.
21.What will be on your setlist this time around?
And what expectation do you have from music lovers who will be attending your concert? I always decide what to play on the spot, but of course some of my hits will be on the setlist for sure. The rest will all be a surprise!
22.What is the difference between fans in India and back home? What separates them?
That’s difficult to say. You have different energy levels in countries I think, but I love all my fans and appreciate all the support. I always find it so overwhelming when I come to a country and people are already waiting for me at the airport. And then at the show the crowd is absolutely madness. That’s crazy and I’m really grateful for it.
23.What do you plan to do (visit, gorge on etc) once you are in India?
Anything special that you experienced in our earlier trip/s that you would like to share? I don’t have any plans so far, but I would definitely like to visit some beautiful places. So hopefully my schedule allows it. Last time I went to see the Taj Mahal and it was so beautiful and impressive.
24.At just 21 you are one among the best DJs in the world. How do you handle so much fame?
I have a great team around me, and my friends and family who support me at all times. They also make sure that I stay grounded. That’s why I also love to bring them with me on tour as much as possible. It’s great to be able to share my success with the people I love.
25. In general, what inspires you to create a new track? How do you think about the music?
I get inspired by so many different things; the people around me, the places I visit, listening to other artists’ music. I wake up listening to music and I go to bed listening to music.
26. What keeps you occupied when you are not creating music?
When I’m not in the studio or touring I love hanging out with my family and friends and just relax. I love having them around me. But I think the moments that I’m not producing are very rare haha.
27. What are you most looking forward to as part of your India concert?
Any plans of sightseeing as well? I’m really looking forward to seeing all the dedicated fans partying to my set of course! I hope I can also explore India a bit, it’s such a beautiful country that has a lot of sightseeing to offer. Also the culture is so different than back at home. I love that.
28. Any new single/album that your fans can look forward to in the coming few months?
At the moment I have a lot of unreleased music. I’m working on a new radio single as well. I’ve been in the studio with Ryan Tedder, I got something in the works with him and I’m very excited about that. I just can’t wait to put out new music.
29 .Any message for your Indian fans?
Definitely! Thank you guys so much for your amazing support and I hope to see all of you at the show! Let’s party together.
