When you hear the name David Guetta, you think of a global superstar. Guetta is often credited for bringing mainstream EDM to America with his crossover to pop music and is one of the catalysts for the EDM boom across the world. That is why it is quite hard to imagine that he too started with humble beginnings in the underground scene in his early days.
In this 15-minute mini-documentary, David takes us back to where it all started for him. He reminisces on his clubbing nights in Paris, where he first started off playing all kinds of music in his 8-hour sets at a gay club. David narrates various highlights on his journey to become a global phenomenon that he is today. He recalls the one time he met the legendary duo Daft Punk in their studio which led to him being signed to a major record label.
While all this may feel like just another documentary on a success story of a superstar DJ, it takes an unprecedented turn when the 51-year-old French starts explaining how the pressure of delivering hits from a major label and headlining festivals with pre-planned sets became monotonous for him.
David says, “At this stage of my life, I don’t do this for money anymore. I was missing making records without thinking it has to be a hit. I just realized that it was making me miserable to be stuck in having to deliver a hit. He added, “Some DJs play on autopilot. There’s no emotion into this, there’s no risque, no excitement and I just asked myself, do I need to work like this?”, which leads us to the launch of his new house music alias, Jack Back. The 51-year old French DJ first introduced us to Jack Back when he released whopping 12 new tracks on the Disc 2 of his studio album ‘7’ last year.
Regardless of what you feel about David Guetta and his music, Road To Jack Back is an entertaining and inspiring documentary which every dance music enthusiast must watch. Check it out below:
