Time and time again, Eric Prydz has blown the minds with his stage productions in EPIC (Eric Prydz In Concert) shows, but with EPIC 6.0 Holosphere performance at Tomorrowland this year, the Swedish maestro took things to a whole another level. Unfortunately, though, Prydz’s technologically most advanced show concept only had a one-off appearance following the roof of Freedom stage at Tomorrowland collapsing, forcing the cancellation of Holosphere on Weekend 2.

Before all of this unfolded, Dani Deahl – DJ, producer, journalist, editor sat down with Eric Prydz and went behind the scenes of the Holosphere show production for The Verge‘s Future of Music.

Eric revealed that the 2-hour long Holosphere show took his team over 2 years of hard work. Their dedication indeed paid off when thousands in the crowd saw the magic unfold in total amazement. The gigantic 8 meter wide Holosphere had 72 panels, 17,840 LED strips, 545 lighting fixtures and weighed over 5 tonnes!
One of the most memorable visuals of the show was when the sphere transformed into a giant eyeball. Talking about the process behind conceptualizing it, Eric Prydz’s show designer and VJ Liam Tomaszewski explained how he tested the idea on a yoga ball, while lighting head Ross Chapple tried out different configurations of lasers and lights.

It is quite rare occurrence when Eric Prydz sits down for an interview, so when he did with Dani, he opened up on how he always looks to push the boundaries.
“Ever since we started doing EPIC, our goal has always been to try and blow people away, but in a way that they haven’t been blown away before at an electronic dance music event. New technology will become available and we will figure out a way to incorporate that, and we will be able to do something that we haven’t been able to do before. It’s fun to see how far you can push it, how extreme you can make things, and how you can come up with ideas that people haven’t seen or experienced before. Then, the joy of seeing people going absolutely crazy over it is an amazing feeling.”
