Maddy O’Neal isn’t one-note. After five years touring and collaborating with Pretty Lights, CloZee, Big Gigantic, and The Floozies, the Denver-based musician has carved out her own brand of future bass that blends dramatic synth design, glittering electro-soul melodies, and funky, pulsing basslines.
O’Neal will release her second album in September after releasing four EPs since her 2016 debut.
The album promises to be a bold personal statement that explores O’Neal’s out-of-the-box, genre-blending creative process. The creative polymath played drum pads, keyboard, and synths, and included vocalists and instrumentalists.
O’Neal published “Never Fades” in May. “Never Fades” was the appropriate opening to the shapeshifting album that followed.
“Follow Me” highlights Maddy’s varied style with trap and bass. The tune features producer/trumpeter Balkan Bump, who worked with Gramatik and Talib Kweli. It combines a trap beat with futuristic synths and an erupting horn line.
Maddy O’Neal and Balkan Bump’s debut collaboration, “Follow Me,” fuses electronic and organic elements. The track incorporates jazzy, improvisational musicianship, trapped-out percussion, distorted horn rhythms, and booming bass tones.
O’Neal grew up on rock ‘n’ roll, funk, and soul records. “Follow Me” features half-time bass, trap, and reggae, reflecting her musical origins.
She’ll perform “Follow Me” and other album singles at Lollapalooza, Secret Dreams, Same Same But Different, and Lost Lands. O’Neal’s live performances include unique compositions, percussion pads, and an interwoven tale, ranging from grimey bangers to vocal bass tracks and head nod disco.
