Any special preparations you do when you perform in your home country? Trance from France
It’s always exciting to play in France because it’s nice to represent the Trance scene with progressive sound, sometimes it’s just unfortunate that it doesn’t represent as much as it should be. But every time I’m playing in my country, I absolutely love it, it’s an honor for me to do it.
You have been part of such an iconic compilation series In Search of Sunrise. How was your experience mixing it?
It was great because In Search of Sunrise was my favorite mix compilation series. It’s what made me fall in love with Trance music in the first place. So when they asked me to do a mix a couple of years ago, I wanted to pay homage to the original trance sound. So, I did some remixes of classics and gave that old trance classic vibe to the whole mix. It was an amazing experience and I wish I could have done like 100 volumes because I absolutely love this series.
These days we have TikTok, Instagram reels with 30 seconds of content. Has it impacted production skills with this kind of behavioral change?
It’s been very complicated because I feel like nowadays our job as a producer is to focus on social media instead of focusing on creating great tracks. I’m still learning and I think that I need to adapt to the new rules. I’m not the perfect person to actually do social media, but I’m just trying to do my best. But, I’d rather stay in the studio doing music instead of doing thirty seconds of production.
What is in the future for Matt Fax?
I’m going to start thinking about a new album in a couple of years. Probably a fifteen year compilation, because I’ve been doing music for fifteen years. That’s also a project I’m thinking about and doing a couple of collaboration remixes working a lot with Armada with A State of Trance, so yeah a lot of things are coming.
When you play at a festival and when you play in a club with 50-100 people. How do you prepare yourself?
When I’m preparing for a festival I like to play some really energetic music. I always prepare a playlist scratching my head around like what if I play that track and what if they don’t like it? The best 10 pumping tracks in one hour. When I’m doing a club show, it’s like I prepare maybe 50 tracks and then just play with the crowd, see their reactions and allow myself to go with the flow. It’s something that you can’t do with the festival because people are here to see artists, and you have very limited time. So you need to catch their attention from the first second.
These days Trance producers are taking melodies from techno. What’s your take on it?
I think there’s a fine line between inspiration and stealing. The music has been around for so long that it’s really hard to be original and do something that hasn’t been done yet. I know the fact that techno is taking sounds from trance, but I think it’s pretty good because it kind of connects two worlds that don’t have anything to see together in the first place. It’s really exciting like in ASOT you see some great techno artists like Adam Bayer, Agents of Time, Eli Brown and that’s great. It kind of opens the sound of trance to new people and to new horizons.
Any suggestions or advice you like to give to your fans or upcoming producers?
Just try to stay as productive as possible and serious about your career. It’s about making good music and having a good brand, selling yourself, working on social media, and just keep believing in it. I know it’s not always easy, but if you have friends around you that just support you, keep pushing and just good things will happen. Sometimes it happens in one year, ten years, fifteen years, but it happens at some point.
We are from India so any plans on touring our country?
I’m actually in talks with a few promoters to do a tour in India in the next couple of months. So I would love to play in India, got a couple of offers already. So if any promoters are interested, I would happily do that. India is a country that I haven’t visited yet, so I would be very excited to play there for sure.
