January 31st was certainly going to be a big day for the Indian music scene, as the nation would have witnessed the launch of the most-awaited music streaming platform SPOTIFY. But the things didn’t go as planned, the company had to postpone the launch citing a number of reasons. It was expected that the Swedish giant would be opening up its platform to a potential 1.3bn new customers in India. Although, they didn’t announce or confirm any official launch date a number of sources said SPOTIFY will be making its way to Indian markets during the January end but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

It is said that the streaming giant has not yet locked down deals for the country with the three major-label groups — Sony, Universal, and Warner. Back in 2018, Universal, Sony, and Warner had held up Spotify’s India launch by not providing music licenses for the market. This was after Spotify had started directly licensing music from artists, bypassing the labels. Although, the news came out that Spotify has inked a content deal with T-Series. Spotify has a lot of eager fans awaiting its launch in the country. To launch the service in India, SPOTIFY has to make sure that it covers all the music genres, Indian artists, Songs in various Indian languages.

Let’s wait for the official announcement till then!
