Australian DJ/Producer Throttle has begun receiving attention from the world as a new comer rapidly going up the ladder of dance music scene. Back in 2013, Avicii approved of Throttle’s remix of “You Make Me” and invited him to join him on several shows. Later Oliver Heldens invited him on tour. Robbie Bergin has been making waves in the scene with a number of chart topping releases. Although just 19 years of age, Australian producer Throttle has become one of the hottest names in house music. Drawing from disco, jazz, hip-hop and funk – he fuses together countless references and eras into a genre he calls “dirty-disco”. We got an opportunity to talk with the Aussie prodigy before he makes his way to It’s The Ship 2018.
1. HOW WAS YOUR SUMMER SO FAR, WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS?
T: It’s been incredible. I’ve spent the last 3 months based in Europe performing a tonne of festivals and solo shows. One moment that stands out was premiering my upcoming collab with Kungs, ‘Disco Night’ on the Tomorrowland mainstage.
2. YOUR COLLABORATION WITH OLIVER HELDENS MADE AN EXCEPTIONAL MARK IN YOUR CAREER, CAN YOU SHARE THE STORY BEHIND IT?
T: Ollie and I had been chatting online for a few years before starting ‘waiting’. We’d never met but would give each other feedback on ideas we were working on. I had an idea I was working on which felt like a perfect fit for a collab. Ollie was into it and waiting was born!
3. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO PRODUCE A TRACK WITH THE FUNKIER DISCO SOUNDS CULMINATED WITH MODERN PRODUCTION ELEMENTS?
T: It all comes down to groove. All my music, like the majority of music that came out of that era is very groove based. Combining that with modern synths and samples gives an immediate balance between the two worlds.
4. WHAT ARE THE TOP 5 ACTS AT THIS MOMENT ACCORDING TO YOU?
T: Fisher, Don Diablo, Kungs, Chris Lake, Loud Luxury
5. IF YOU WANT TO REWORK AN OLD CLASSIC WHICH CLASSIC YOU WOULD?
T: Anything by MJ.6
6. AVICII PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN YOUR CAREER, WHICH THING ABOUT THE SWEDISH GENIUS REMINDS YOU OFTEN?
T: I remember the first time I opened for Avicii in 2014. It was my first real show as Throttle. I went straight from my bedroom to playing in front of thousands of people and that was all thanks to Tim. He played my remix of ‘You Make Me’ during his set, and the crowd erupted. It’s one of my fondest memories.
7. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THROTTLE IN 2018?
T: Lots of new Throttle music!
8. YOU’RE ALL SET TO PERFORM AT THE ASIA’S LARGEST FESTIVAL AT THE SEA ITS THE SHIP, HOW SPECIAL THIS PERFORMANCE IS GOING TO BE FOR YOU?
T: Its going to be absolutely mad. It’s my first time performing on a cruise ship. I’ve actually never been to Singapore either, so I’m very very excited Apparently I also get to play beer pong against my fans on board which will be outrageous. Look out!
