Every year when DJ Mag reveals their annual rankings of Top 100 DJs based on popular vote, EDM world seems to go under a shitstorm with many criticizing the whole idea of ranking the art of DJing. The current #1 DJ on the controversial Top 100 list, Martin Garrix, has now openly come out to say that he doesn’t care about the rankings and being on top of it. The 23-year-old sensation was crowned as numero uno DJ for the third time in a row last year. With the results for the 2019 poll set to be announced next week during Amsterdam Dance Event, Martin Garrix has dared to speak out something which probably no DJ Mag winner has stated before.

In an interview with a Dutch Newspaper Het Parool recently, Garrix was asked about being the #1 DJ, to which he bluntly said:

“I really don’t care about the so-called world ranking. I don’t need a list to do what I like. Yes, I am at no. 1. And Tiësto is many places below me. That doesn’t make sense, does it? I started playing music because of him. I am definitely not a better DJ than him, maybe now I just have a bit more hype around me. By the way, there are also people in that list that I have never heard of, so I have my doubts about the creation.”

Martijn does raise some valid points on the credibility of the whole DJ Mag rankings. There have been many instances in the past where some hardly known DJs riding on powerful marketing campaigns managed to get ranked above industry heavyweights. While some EDM acts use various different tactics and exhaustive social media campaigns for DJ Mag votes, it’s commendable that Martin Garrix has managed to trump them all without ever asking his fans to vote for him.

“In any case, I have never made a call to vote for me and I will never do so. Whether that list should be abolished? I can try, but it will continue. Particularly in Asia, great importance is attached to it. But the only thing that really matters is how many tickets you sell and whether you make people happy.”

The Dutch wunderkind is set to debut brand new show concept ‘The Void’ at his headline event at RAI Amsterdam on October 18-19 during ADE following last year’s hugely acclaimed ANIMA show. For those who will not be able to make it to Amsterdam this week, Martin’s full 2.5hr set will be streamed live. Stay tuned for further updates.
