Shaun Moses has been an integral part of the budding underground electronic music scene coming out of the Indian sub-continent in the last decade. Hailing from Goa (IN), the techno producer crafts his unique style of raw and pulsating techno, with signature driving subs and relentless grooves. His DJ sets showcase an explosive snapshot of his capabilities with atmospheric synth hazes, rolling percussive hits and deep basslines.

With a strong list of labels under his roster, a few notable names being Senso Sounds, Octopus Recordings, Gem Records, Tronic Music and OFF Recordings, he has worked some of the best dancefloors across India and around the globe. With regular tours across Europe and Russia, he continues to expand his reach with each passing year.

2019 saw him bring about his alternative alias, Moses, which showcases a more industrial and leftfield sound that he’s been developing over time. His first release on Shlomi Aber’s – Be As One Imprint, managed to turn heads of some of the most prominent names in the industry while featuring on the playlists of Charlotte De Witte, Paul Ritch, Enrico Sangiuliano and Amotik. Dubbed as one of the finest techno exports to come out of India, Shaun is a key part of the next wave of electronic music producers from the region.

EDMLI: Hello Shaun, how have you been?
Shaun: Great, been a hectic last few months, since the start of this year gigs have picked up, the production process has picked up, and I’ve moved from my old place to a new place, so it’s been all hustle and bustle. But 2022 is really shaping up to be a year that’s making me very excited for sure!

EDMLI: How do you feel about performing at a one-of-a-kind festival experience in the secluded hills?

Shaun: Well, to start off with I’ve never been to the hills in my entire life, traveled all around the world, played festival and club gigs in India, Europe, through the East, and into the western countries but never been to the mountains. Actually looking forward to this experience because I’ve heard so much & gotten recommended so much but never really witnessed this.

So when the organizers of the festival got in touch with my agency, I got very very excited like a Lil boy jumping around his house because it’s given me an opportunity now to not only visit the hills and explore and finally tick this off my bucket list but also the chance to play to a nice intimate audience at a beautiful setting. To put it in short, very excited!

EDMLI: Who/what is your inspiration behind the kind of music that you make?

Shaun: Well, not really gonna put a name behind it because the truth with me and my music production process is that I never really follow a particular producer. So method is like this, going out on a weekend to a few parties & hang with a few friends, if the vibe and experience of the party is really good and inspiring then the next day I get into the studio with that vibe still in my mind and drive that energy to a track writing process.

A lot of times day-to-day activities give a lot of inspiration, being from Goa I’m always either at the beach or hanging with friends, this excites me, gives me inspiration and taking all this synergy into the studio usually results in curating better productions.

EDMLI: Your kind of music sounds very experimental, is there anything else you’d like to try in the future with your productions?

Shaun: Yes yes,the thing here is I’ve never really worked with a professional vocalist in my life and if you look back at my past records, have done a lot of vocal chops.

Creatively using vocal chops in certain spaces in a track adds a lot of flavor and energy to the production for sure.

EDMLI: How do you feel about techno getting so big in India and Indian artists finally getting the recognition that they were missing out on in the past?

Shaun: It’s always been a bit more difficult for us Indians because in my personal opinion we have been a bit cut-off from the rest of the world. Having gone and stayed in Europe, Russia and different parts, I do feel this.

The last few years have been unbelievable for all of us as artists in the EDM field because the boom has been exponential & huge. Happier for this scene in the country right now and every amazing producer out there, friend or even an acquaintance that’s doing well, they all deserve it, they’re working hard and to be an Indian and cut-out and really pierced through the industry in terms of the International level it’s much harder for us. But, they say where there’s a will there’s a way and you’re already seeing top Indian talents piercing through the International scene.

EDMLI: What can we expect from your B2B set with Aardy at Off Grid Festival.

Shaun: (Laughs)Not gonna reveal everything because you’re gonna have to come and hear us play to experience all the surprises that we have in store. But what I can tell you is that we will be trying a lot of unreleased new material that we’ve produced together. Not gonna play our usual stuff for sure, but experiment with a lot of different ideas and styles. In between eventually will play a lot of our usual stuff but it won’t primarily be a normal Shaun Moses and Aardy set that’s for sure! We’ve got something exciting in store for everyone coming to hear us perform.

OFF GRID is set to take place on 30th April – 1st May, 2022 in Himachal Pradesh, India, you can buy tickets from here.
